Having a perfect pair of goggles is like having a superpower: you can see clearly underwater, and the goggles feel as natural as a part of your own body. Finding that perfect pair can take some trial and error, though. Here are the things you’ll want to know when you start your search.
Check if the strap can be easily adjusted and doesn’t detach itself too easily. Otherwise, you’ll quickly become frustrated when you try to adjust it at the pool.
Are the lenses dark or light? I prefer light lenses. But if you swim outside or in bright environments dark lenses can be preferable.
Check that the lenses have an anti-fog coating. Coated lenses are better as you won’t need to defog them as often (I have yet to find a pair of swimming goggles that never becomes fogged).
Swimming goggles come in a lot of sizes and shapes. Choosing the right ones is mostly a matter of personal preferences.
However, if you need to dive from starting blocks or do quick flip turns, be aware that larger goggles will slide more easily than smaller ones.
make sure you chose a look that you like. If you don’t feel good wearing your goggles, it won’t be long before you’ll want to buy another pair. So don’t neglect this important aspect!
This is probably not that important for most people with very cheap contact lenses out there, but there are also goggles with prescription.
So, if you cannot see the swim clock or worse, the wall, and you don't wear contact lenses, you can totally get yourself some goggles with a prescription made just for you and swimming does not have to be off-limits for you.
Make sure your goggles are a tight fit so water does not enter. To do this, apply the goggles to your face without the strap and check that the goggles stay in place and there is suction for at least 1 second.
Next, put the goggles on with the strap and ensure that the goggles fit comfortably. Areas to take note of are the nose bridge and the eye area. With the goggles strapped to your face, ensure that the goggles have a tight fit.
To preserve the life of your goggles for as long as possible, follow these rules:
Always rinse your swimming goggles in cold water after use, to remove any chlorine, salt or sand.
2. Do not leave in a swim bag, but leave out to dry naturally.
3. Keep out of direct sunlight when not in use, as this can degrade the silicone material.
4. Do not rub the inside of the lenses as this can scratch them and rub off the anti-fog coating.
5. Consider buying a goggle pouch to store and protect your goggles.
